It was not until the mid-19th century that Vermeer would once again begin to gain the acclaim he richly deserved. Today, Johannes Vermeer is recognized as one of the true masters of art. Only 36 known Vermeer paintings have survived the over three centuries since his death. Their subject ranges from the religious to the common foibles of man's everyday life.
